Last week, the Washington Business Journal released its annual list of “Best Places to Work.” Out of hundreds of companies that were nominated, Spartan Medical Inc. made the list of 75 best employers in the greater Washington, D.C. region. The distinguished “Best Places to Work” award, now in its 16th year, is notable for being quantitatively measured by employee survey responses rather than a panel of outside judges.
The survey, developed by Quantum Workplace technologies, measured things like job satisfaction, workplace culture, and management practices. Employees answered questions about their ability to balance their work and home life, how well they thought they fit in, and what kind of benefits they were provided. They were also given a chance to highlight any distinctive characteristics about their workplace.
Most Spartan employees mentioned the Spartan Shield which symbolizes protection, meaning each member of the team has each other’s back. “When an employee is ill or has family matters to attend to, the entire team takes up the tasks and gets the job done,” explained Nathan Hooker, Director of Customer Service. “It’s a very progressive company culture that rewards hard work, excellence, teamwork and service to others. And it’s all because of the example exhibited at the top of the company.”
“Spartan Medical’s success is attracting talented professionals
and further expanding their capabilities.”
Vince Proffitt, Founder and President of Spartan Medical, is a former Air Force Intelligence Officer whose military background informs his ability to support and protect his team. “Vince goes above and beyond every day to support and protect his team,” said Nick Goebel, Director of Public Relations. “His leadership guides and motivates the Spartan team. We want to reciprocate the support he provides and we don’t want to let him down. The result is a level of employee engagement I’ve never witnessed before.”
Mr. Proffitt’s leadership along with the Spartan Shield create a unique model of employee engagement that brings unparalleled performance out of each individual. “We train each Spartan to operate with a service-minded perspective and the pursuit of excellence in everything we do, explained Eric Morrow, Director of Operations. “It is important for any organization to place people in the right positions to maximize both their potential and the company’s overall success and growth.”
Donny Knepper, Spartan Medical General Counsel, said, “A customer recently observed that ‘Spartan Medical is the only company I have ever seen where each employee takes responsibility for the success of the company as if he or she was its owner.’ That is a direct result of our leadership. Spartan Medical’s success is attracting talented professionals and further expanding their capabilities. I count it as a blessing every single day, reminding myself how fortunate I am to be part of this organization.”
Mr. Proffitt added, “Spartan Medical was built brick-by-brick by dedicated people who believe in each other and our mission. We are privately-owned, growing rapidly, and have no debt, and our single tangible asset is our amazing group of people. Our success is 100% driven by the Spartan Family, which this award recognizes. To me, nothing is more valuable.”
Rankings of the honored businesses in each category (grouped by size) will be announced at an awards dinner on May 12th at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner, and in the May 13th issue of the Washington Business Journal.
