WELKINS ANNOUNCES SALES AND DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT WITH SPARTAN MEDICAL FOR COOLING DEVICES
Agreement Covers Sale of Medical, Athletic, and Industrial Products in the United States
ROSEVILLE, CA, October 9, 2012 — WElkins, LLC, which recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance of its EMT and ICU Temperature Management Systems, today announced the signing of a sales and distribution agreement with Spartan Medical, Inc., a leading provider of best-‐in-‐class advanced medical solutions. Under the agreement, Spartan Medical will have exclusive rights to sell and distribute WElkins’ microenvironment cooling products to the U.S. Government, including the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
The agreement is an important step in commercializing WElkins’ medical, military-‐ industrial, and athletic products. “The completion of this agreement with such an outstanding, committed, and well-‐positioned partner as Spartan Medical is a strong endorsement of WElkins’ product line,” said Christopher Blodgett, the company’s Chief Operating Officer.” In Spartan Medical, we have found an experienced and veteran-‐owned partner with the ability to provide full and immediate sales coverage for WElkins in some of our key target markets.”
“Spartan Medical is thrilled to work with a company like WElkins. This is a generational product launch . . . like bringing cardiac defibrillators to market. I firmly believe that we are the right company, with the world's best people, ready to educate, sell, and support this game-‐changing technology,” said Vince Proffitt, President of Spartan Medical. “The entire concept of Spartan Medical was to shift medical device sales from the ‘latest widget’ to providing life-‐changing technologies that fill genuine medical needs. This is our mission, our focus, and these cooling systems will save, change, and improve countless lives.” Proffitt continued, “therapeutic hypothermia has the potential to save lives and limit long-‐ lasting neurological damage, so we are particularly eager to bring the EMT/ICU System to market and support WElkins’ mission to transform human survival and quality life.”
Therapeutic cooling is among the most potent interventions for hypoxic-‐ischemic brain injury, limiting tissue damage by reducing oxygen metabolism and inflammation, while maintaining cell membrane integrity. The EMT/ICU System includes a lightweight, portable cooling unit for pre-‐hospital induction of therapeutic cooling (i.e., immediately after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)), which can be crucial to patient survival and recovery.
WElkins, LLC is dedicated to transforming human survival, quality of life, and performance in life threatening and extreme conditions across the spectrum of human activity. Founded by Bill Elkins, a father of the modern spacesuit and pioneer in microenvironment temperature regulation, WElkins fields a diverse family of liquid cooling systems with myriad applications across medical, military, industrial, and athletic markets.
